Susan's Cycle: Day Number 2
Menstruation is caused by the shedding of the uterine lining (called the endometrium). The lining sheds because during my previous cycle, an egg was not fertilized and my hormone levels have changed dramatically. My estrogen and progesterone levels are low and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) levels are rising.
We'll talk about hormones later – let's talk about the endometrium, which is very important to a fertilized egg. It contains important nutrients that feed the egg, and it also eventually supports the placenta. Today, nearly the entire lining of my uterus is sloughing off so that a new lining can take its place in preparation for the next egg. It's exciting to think of how my body is already preparing for conception!
"Thanks for the information! I'm trying to conceive No. 1 and feel clueless at times, and that really helps! The gals on the TTC No. 1 Thread are great, but we are all new at this too. We learn from the wise!"
